Pokonyan! - Yume no Daibouken is one of those weird, charming Game Boy titles that never left Japan. You play as this little cat-thing (Pokonyan, obviously) bouncing through dreamlike stages, collecting stars while dodging oddly specific hazards like bouncing apples and floating alarm clocks. The controls take a second to get used to—your jumps feel floaty at first, but once you figure out the rhythm, it’s weirdly satisfying to chain hops across clouds and giant mushrooms.
Visually, it’s pure early ‘90s Game Boy: simple but full of personality, with chunky sprites and a soundtrack that’s equal parts cheerful and slightly off-putting. Some stages throw curveballs, like sudden wind gusts or platforms that vanish if you linger too long. It’s not super hard, but it’s got just enough jank to keep you on your toes.
Definitely a niche pick, but if you’re into obscure platformers with a side of surrealism, this one’s a trip. The cat’s grin alone is worth the price of admission.
