Pokémon Stadium 2 is basically the N64 flexing its 3D muscles to make your Pokémon battles feel way more intense than the Game Boy could ever pull off. You’ve got all your favorites from Gold and Silver in full polygonal glory, and yeah, watching Typhlosion blast through a Hyper Beam in 3D never gets old.
The main draw is obviously the battles—turn-based, but way flashier than the handheld versions. There’s also this weirdly addictive set of mini-games (seriously, the Lickitung sushi-eating one is bizarrely fun) and a whole Academy mode that actually teaches you how to not suck at team-building. If you’ve got a Transfer Pak, you can even bring in your own Pokémon from the Game Boy games, which is cool until you realize your underleveled Cyndaquil is about to get wrecked by the AI.
It’s not perfect—some of the animations are janky by today’s standards, and the announcer’s voice will either hype you up or make you mute the TV. But if you’re into old-school Pokémon with a side of nostalgia, this one’s still a blast.
