Pokémon Snap on N64 is one of those weird, wonderful games that shouldn’t work but totally does. You’re not battling or collecting—just riding around in a little cart snapping photos of Pokémon doing their thing in the wild. The first time a Pikachu casually hops onto a surfboard, or a Charmander starts roasting marshmallows, you’ll grin like an idiot.
The Japanese version plays exactly the same, but some of the text and menus are obviously in Japanese. Doesn’t really matter though—you’ll spend most of your time lining up shots, tossing apples to lure Pokémon into better poses, and cursing when that perfect shot gets ruined because a Doduo photobombed you at the last second.
It’s short, but there’s something weirdly satisfying about replaying levels to find all the hidden interactions. Professor Oak’s brutal photo critiques still haunt me.
