About Pokemon Puzzle League (f)
Pokemon Puzzle League came out for the Nintendo 64 in 2000, developed and published by Nintendo. It was part of that wave of puzzle games on the console that offered a different kind of challenge compared to the platformers and adventures dominating the system. This one stood out because it wrapped its mechanics in the world of the Pokemon anime, giving players a familiar cast of characters in an unfamiliar type of game.
You control a cursor to swap adjacent tiles on a rising grid, aiming to line up three or more of the same color to clear them. The main objective is to prevent the blocks from reaching the top of the screen, which you do by creating chains and combos that send garbage blocks to your opponent's side. Two key mechanics define the play: the ability to shift entire rows horizontally to set up larger matches, and a panic-clearing move that wipes a single block type when your meter is full. The game starts deceptively simple but the difficulty ramps up sharply, especially in the later stages of the single player campaign where the blocks rise with alarming speed. It feels like a constant, frantic race against the clock that demands quick thinking and faster fingers.
