Pokemon Puzzle League came out for the Nintendo 64 in 2000, a time when the console was full of experimental spin-offs. Nintendo published it, and it was a clear attempt to bring the puzzle genre to the 3D era, even if the core gameplay remained in two dimensions. It felt like a natural fit for the system, offering a different kind of challenge compared to the platformers and adventures that dominated the library.

You control a cursor to swap adjacent tiles on a rising grid, aiming to line up three or more of the same color to clear them. The main objective is to prevent the blocks from reaching the top of the screen, which you do by creating chain reactions and combos. Two key mechanics define the game: the ability to shift entire rows horizontally to set up bigger matches, and a special attack meter that fills as you clear blocks, letting you send garbage blocks to your opponent's screen. The pacing is relentless, especially in the later stages, where the blocks climb faster and the AI becomes brutally efficient. It feels like a constant, frantic race against the rising tide, demanding quick eyes and even quicker fingers.
