About Pocket Mahjong
Pocket Mahjong was released for the Game Boy in 1990, a time when puzzle games were finding a solid home on Nintendo's handheld. It was published by Nintendo, bringing a digital version of the classic tile game to a portable screen. This was one of several traditional games adapted for the system, fitting right in alongside titles like Tetris and Dr. Mario.
You don't control a character; you interact directly with a grid of mahjong tiles. Your goal is to clear the entire board by matching identical, unblocked pairs of tiles. The core mechanics involve scanning the layout for available matches, where a tile is free if nothing is on top of it and at least one of its long sides is exposed. You study the pile, looking for the best pairs to remove without trapping other tiles. The game starts simply but the layouts become more complex, demanding careful planning and a good memory. It feels like a quiet, methodical test of your observation and foresight.
