I first played Platoon on the Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1988. It was developed and published by Ocean Software, a company known for many movie and military game adaptations during that era. On the NES, a system filled with platformers and fantasy adventures, Platoon stood out for its attempt to bring a gritty, realistic war experience to the console.

In the game, you control a lone U.S. soldier during the Vietnam War. Your primary objective is to survive through a series of jungle and village environments, ultimately rescuing captured comrades. The gameplay shifts between different perspectives; one moment you are navigating the jungle from a top-down view, carefully avoiding enemy patrols and searching for items, and the next you are in a side-scrolling section, crouching to avoid gunfire and tossing grenades into enemy bunkers. You collect various weapons like M16 rifles and M60 machine guns, managing your ammunition carefully. The game is notoriously difficult, with enemies appearing suddenly and limited resources making each screen a tense puzzle. Playing Platoon feels like a constant, unforgiving struggle for survival.
