Pilotwings 64 is one of those chill-but-deceptively-tricky flight games where you’re just vibing until you realize you’ve faceplanted into a mountain for the fifth time. You start off with simple stuff—hovering around in a gyrocopter, trying not to crash into buildings—but then it throws hang gliders, jetpacks, and even a weird human cannonball mission at you. The physics actually feel pretty solid for an N64 game, and the landscapes are surprisingly detailed for their time, from rolling countryside to tiny little towns you can buzz over.
What I love is how it balances relaxation with challenge. One minute you’re lazily drifting over a sunset, the next you’re white-knuckling a landing because the wind decided to mess with you. And yeah, the controls take some getting used to—especially the hang glider—but nailing a perfect score after a dozen attempts is weirdly satisfying. It’s the kind of game you boot up when you just want to zone out but still feel like you’re accomplishing something.
Also, the soundtrack slaps. That’s non-negotiable.
