Phantom Fighter came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, developed by Marigul Management. It was part of that wave of late NES games that tried different things, drawing from the Hong Kong movie "Mr. Vampire" for its theme of battling Chinese hopping vampires and other spirits.

You control a martial arts master traveling with a pupil, moving screen by screen through villages overrun by phantoms. Your main goal is to enter every infested house and clear it of monsters using a repertoire of kung fu moves. Combat is straightforward; you punch and kick your way through ghosts, and after defeating a phantom you often receive a gift that restores your health or temporarily powers up your attacks. You also talk to villagers scattered throughout the towns to get clues about the hauntings. The game moves at a steady pace, though some enemies can be surprisingly quick, demanding good timing. Playing it feels like a methodical cleanup of haunted locations, one screen at a time.
