Phantom Fighter is this weird little NES gem based on an old Hong Kong vampire flick. You play as a martial arts master roaming through haunted villages, kicking ghost butt with your apprentice tagging along. The houses are packed with phantoms—some float around throwing fireballs, others just lunge at you. At first, I kept getting wrecked because I didn’t realize you could block, but once you get the timing down, the combat feels surprisingly solid for an NES beat 'em up.
Between fights, villagers drop hints about where to go next or how to deal with certain spirits. The gifts you get after clearing a house are a nice touch—sometimes it’s just health, but other times you’ll snag a scroll that beefs up your attacks. The whole thing has this campy, low-budget charm, like playing through a cheesy kung fu movie. Just don’t expect deep lore or flashy combos.
