About Penguin Wars
I first played Penguin Wars on my Game Boy in 1990. It was published by ASCII Corporation, a name I saw on a few other cartridges from that time. The game felt like a product of its era, a simple two player concept squeezed onto a portable screen, perfect for quick sessions when you found someone else with a link cable.
You control a penguin, or sometimes another animal, on a single screen arena. Your goal is to knock out your opponent by hitting them with a ball. You can pick up the ball, throw it, and block incoming shots. The main strategy involves bouncing the ball off the walls to create tricky angles, and you can also power up your throws by holding the button longer. The AI opponents get surprisingly aggressive in later rounds, demanding quick reflexes. It feels like a fast paced, chaotic game of dodgeball with a feathery twist.
