About Parodius
Parodius on the Game Boy came out in 1990 from Konami, a company known for its arcade hits. It arrived when the handheld was still new, and its library was filling up with all sorts of experiments. This was one of them, a portable take on a series that already had a reputation for being strange.
You pilot a selection of odd ships, like the Vic Viper or a penguin, moving screen by screen through levels filled with enemy waves and large bosses. Your main goal is simply to survive the journey, shooting everything in your path. The game has a few key mechanics; you collect bells to power up your weapons, and you can choose which upgrade path to follow, altering your shot type and options. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty can be punishing, demanding quick reflexes and memorization of enemy patterns. It feels frantic and silly, a chaotic scramble that is both challenging and genuinely amusing.
