About Parodius Da! (japan)

Parodius Da! came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, developed and published by Konami. It was part of that late NES period where developers were really pushing the hardware, creating games that felt more complex and visually dense than earlier titles. This one stood out because it was a direct parody of Konami's own Gradius series, taking that familiar horizontal shooter formula and filling it with absurd characters and situations.

You control one of several oddball ships, like a penguin in a fighter craft or the Vic Viper from Gradius with a giant moai head. Your goal is to fly from left to right, clearing each stage by destroying the waves of strange enemies, from dancing octopuses to sushi on plates. The core mechanics are pure Gradius: you collect power-up capsules to build a customizable weapon array, including options like lasers and missiles, and you have a screen-clearing bomb for emergencies. The pacing is relentless, with the screen constantly scrolling and enemy patterns that demand quick reflexes. The difficulty is steep, especially in later levels where the bullet patterns and environmental hazards become overwhelming. Playing it feels like being in a chaotic, silly cartoon where you are constantly on the edge of being wiped out.
