About Outburst (japan)
Outburst was a Japan only Game Boy release from 1990, developed by A-Wave and published by Asmik. It arrived early in the handheld's life, a time when developers were still exploring what a portable action game could be. You control a small, blocky spaceship tasked with defending a planet's core from an onslaught of geometric invaders. The screen is static, a single arena where you maneuver left and right along the bottom.
Your primary objective is to prevent the core, a central sphere, from being destroyed. You fire upward to eliminate descending enemies, but the key mechanic is your ability to catch and redirect enemy shots. By moving into the path of incoming fire, you absorb the projectiles and can then launch them back with increased power. This catch and return system is essential, as your standard weapon is weak against larger foes. The game is fast and demanding; enemies and their bullets quickly fill the screen, requiring constant movement and precise timing to survive. It feels like a tense, high stakes game of cosmic ping pong where a single mistake can cascade into failure.
