About Otogibanashi Taisen (japan)
Otogibanashi Taisen is a Japan only Game Boy release from 1990, developed by KID. It arrived early in the system's life, a time when developers were still figuring out how to build substantial adventures on the small screen. This game is a side scrolling action title where you control a young boy named Momotar?, based on the Japanese folk tale.
You guide Momotar? through a series of themed worlds, moving screen by screen to battle various y?kai, or Japanese demons. Your main goal is to rescue three companions: a dog, a monkey, and a pheasant. You attack with a short range sword, and you can also collect power ups that change your weapon, like a projectile attack. The levels are linear but require careful jumps and enemy pattern recognition. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be unforgiving with limited continues. Playing it feels like navigating a compact, challenging storybook where every screen demands your full attention.
