About Othello World (japan)
I picked up Othello World for the Game Boy, a Japan only release from 1990 published by Tsukuda Original. It was part of that wave of early portable games that tried to adapt classic board games, a common sight next to the Tetris and Super Mario Land cartridges. This one stood out because it wasn't just a straight port of the disk flipping game; it tried to build a small adventure around it.
You control a character who walks through an overworld map, entering towns and castles to challenge various opponents to games of Othello. Your main goal is to defeat a series of champions to become the master. The signature mechanics are the overworld exploration, which breaks up the matches, and the Othello gameplay itself, which uses the standard rules of surrounding your opponent's pieces. The computer opponents provide a decent challenge, their difficulty increasing as you progress, which forces you to think several moves ahead. It feels like a quiet, thoughtful puzzle disguised as a simple adventure.
