About Othello World
I first played Othello World on the original Game Boy back in 1990. It was published by Acclaim and developed by Kawada, a straightforward adaptation of the board game for the handheld. In an era dominated by action platformers and puzzle games, this was a quiet, thoughtful title you could play anywhere. It didn't try to be flashy; it just offered the classic game in a portable format.
You control the cursor to place your black or white discs on the 8x8 grid. The main objective is to end the game with more of your color discs on the board than your opponent's. The core mechanics are the same as the physical game: you flank your opponent's discs to flip them to your side, and the game automatically calculates all valid moves for you. The pacing is methodical, and the computer opponent provides a decent challenge, forcing you to think several moves ahead. It feels like a pocket-sized mental workout, a calm but engaging test of strategy.
