About Othello
I first played Othello on the Game Boy back in 1990. It was developed by HAL Laboratory, the same company that later made Kirby, and it was one of the many puzzle and board game adaptations that filled the system's library. This was a time when having a complex game in your pocket was still a novelty, and Othello fit right in with that portable, thoughtful experience.
You control the game by placing black or white discs on an 8x8 grid, trying to outflank your opponent's pieces to flip them to your color. The main objective is to end the game with more of your colored discs on the board than your opponent's. Key mechanics include planning several moves ahead to set up trapping maneuvers and constantly reassessing the board state as your opponent flips your pieces back. The AI provides a decent challenge, especially on higher difficulties, forcing you to think carefully about each placement. It feels like a quiet battle of wits that you can pick up and play anywhere.
