About Othello (japan)
I picked up Othello for the Game Boy around 1990, a portable version of the board game developed by HAL Laboratory. It was one of those titles that felt perfectly suited for the handheld; you could play a full game in a short sitting, which was ideal for the platform's on the go nature. While not as flashy as some other releases, it had a quiet presence in the system's library.
You control the black or white discs, taking turns with the computer or a friend via the link cable. The main goal is to end the game with more of your color discs on the board than your opponent's. The core mechanics involve outflanking your opponent's pieces, which then flip to your color; you must constantly reassess the board state as a single move can dramatically shift control of entire rows and diagonals. The game requires a lot of forward thinking, as careless placement can open up large scoring opportunities for your rival. It feels like a constant, quiet battle of wits played out on a small green screen.
