I picked up Othello for the Game Boy back when it came out in 1990. It was developed by HAL Laboratory, the same folks who later made Kirby, and it was one of those quiet, thoughtful games that felt perfect for the handheld. In an era dominated by action platformers and puzzle games like Tetris, this was a different kind of portable challenge, a classic board game shrunk down to fit in your pocket.

You control the black discs, placing one on the board each turn with the goal of ending the game with more of your color than the computer's white discs. The core mechanic is flipping your opponent's pieces; you sandwich a row of their discs between two of your own, and the whole line turns to your color. The small screen means you can see the entire board at once, which makes planning your moves easier, but the computer opponent is surprisingly sharp, especially on higher difficulties. It forces you to think several moves ahead, considering not just your immediate gains but how you'll control the corners and edges of the board. A single misstep can let the AI flip a huge section of the board, turning your advantage into a desperate scramble. Playing it feels like a quiet, focused battle of wits that you can pause and resume anytime.
