About Osawagase! Penguin Boy (japan)
I picked up Osawagase! Penguin Boy a while back, a 1990 Game Boy release from Tonkin House. It came out during that early portable era when developers were still figuring out what worked on the small screen. This one is a side-scrolling action game, but it has its own particular rhythm that sets it apart from more straightforward platformers of the time.
You control a penguin boy who runs and jumps through a series of single-screen rooms. Your main goal is to explore these interconnected areas, find keys, and unlock doors to progress. The signature mechanics involve pushing blocks to create platforms or to trap enemies, and you also use a yo-yo as your primary weapon to defeat foes. The pacing is deliberate; you often need to stop and plan your next move rather than rushing ahead. It can be quite challenging, as a single hit sends you back to the start of the room, demanding careful enemy management and precise jumps. Playing it feels like solving a series of small, physical puzzles while under constant pressure from the creatures roaming each screen.
