Operation Wolf came to the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989, a home port of Taito's arcade game. On the NES, it was a distinctive title, a first-person shooter you played with a standard controller in an era dominated by platformers and action adventures.

You control a lone special forces soldier, moving through six hostile areas from a jungle to an enemy base. Your goal is straightforward: shoot every enemy soldier and vehicle you see while rescuing the hostages they hold. The game scrolls automatically, and you aim a crosshair with the D-pad, firing your unlimited ammo machine gun with the A button. You also have a limited supply of grenades for clearing groups. The screen is constantly busy with enemies popping up from behind trees, helicopters flying overhead, and trucks driving into view, all while you try to avoid shooting the civilians. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is steep; you have a life bar, but it depletes quickly under heavy fire. Playing Operation Wolf feels like a tense, chaotic firefight where your focus is constantly split between offense and preservation.
