About Operation C
I first played Operation C on my Game Boy in 1991, a time when the handheld was full of simple puzzle games and ports. Konami released it as a proper action title, a smaller scale Contra adventure built specifically for the system. It felt like a significant step up from what was usually available on that little screen, a dedicated effort to bring a console style of play into your hands.
You control a lone soldier, running and jumping through side scrolling military bases and alien installations. Your main goal is straightforward: shoot everything that moves and survive to the end of each stage. The game gives you a standard rifle, but you can collect power ups to change your weapon; the spread gun and laser become essential for clearing crowded screens. You explore the levels screen by screen, with some vertical climbing sections that break up the horizontal run and gun. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty is sharp, demanding quick reflexes and smart weapon choices. It feels tense and immediate, a compact burst of action that fully uses the Game Boy's limitations to create a challenging experience.
