Olympic Hockey '98 on N64 is one of those arcade-style hockey games that just feels right when you pick up the controller. The controls are simple—pass, shoot, check—but there’s a surprising amount of finesse once you get into it. I remember my first game, slamming into opponents like a wrecking ball before realizing you could actually deke around them if you timed it right.
The team rosters are all real national squads from the '98 Olympics, so you’re basically rewriting history with Canada, Sweden, or whoever you pick. The physics are a little exaggerated (players slide like they’re on butter sometimes), but that just makes the chaos more fun, especially in multiplayer. My brother and I still argue about whether the U.S. team’s goalie is secretly terrible or if we just suck at defense.
It’s not the deepest hockey sim out there, but if you want fast, no-nonsense action with a buddy, this one holds up way better than it should.
