About Oira Jajamaru!
I picked up Oira Jajamaru! for the Game Boy back around its 1990 release from Jaleco. It was one of those many platformers that filled the system's library, a straightforward adventure that didn't try to reinvent the wheel. You control Jajamaru, a young ninja, on a quest to rescue a princess. The game is structured screen by screen; you move from one static area to the next, clearing enemies and obstacles to proceed.
Your main tools are a short-range sword for attacking foes and the ability to jump between platforms. The primary objective is to navigate these stages, defeating enemies and avoiding environmental hazards like pits and spikes. A signature mechanic is the screen by screen exploration, where each new area presents a self-contained challenge. You also collect power-ups, such as a bow for ranged attacks, which becomes essential for dealing with certain enemies from a distance. The pacing is methodical, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, demanding precise jumps and timing. Playing it feels like a careful, deliberate test of your platforming fundamentals.
