Off Road Challenge came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1998, published by Midway Games. It was part of that wave of arcade style racing games on the console, focusing more on quick, chaotic fun than realistic simulation. You got a selection of trucks and buggies built for mud and dirt, not pavement.

You control one of these off road vehicles across a few different race types, like circuit races and checkpoint challenges. The main goal is straightforward: finish first or beat the clock. The signature mechanics are the vehicle damage and the two player split screen. Hitting obstacles or other racers deforms your truck, affecting its handling until you drive over a repair icon. The split screen mode lets you race directly against a friend on the same couch. The game moves at a fast, bumpy pace and the AI opponents are aggressive, often shoving you into rocks or trees. Driving through all that mud and managing the damage gives the game a rough, physical feel.
