About Obelix
I picked up Obelix for the Game Boy when it came out in 1994, a game developed by Infogrames. It was part of that wave of licensed titles based on the Asterix comics, trying to find a place on the handheld alongside platformers and puzzle games. The game doesn't try to reinvent the wheel; it's a straightforward action platformer from that era, built around a recognizable character.
You control Obelix, the super strong Gaul, and your goal is to rescue the kidnapped Getafix by fighting through Roman camps across different levels. Your main action is swinging Obelix's menhir, a giant stone pillar, to knock out Roman soldiers. You move screen by screen, clearing each area of enemies before you can proceed. Some levels have you searching for keys to unlock gates, adding a light exploration element. The pacing is quick, and the challenge comes from the sheer number of legionnaires thrown at you, requiring you to constantly swing your menhir to create space. It feels like a simple, repetitive brawler where you just plow through crowds.
