About North & South (europe)
North & South came out for the NES in 1990 from Infogrames. It was one of those games from the late 80s and early 90s that tried to mix a cartoon style with a historical setting, in this case the American Civil War. You do not see many strategy games with this kind of presentation on the system.
You control generals for either the Union or Confederate armies. The main goal is to capture all the enemy's forts and states on a strategic map. The game switches between two main phases: a board game style map where you move armies by train, and real time battles where you directly command your troops. In these battles, you manage infantry, cavalry, and cannons to overrun the enemy's position. The pacing is quick, and the computer opponent can be surprisingly aggressive. It feels like a chaotic, fast moving board game brought to life on the screen.
