About North & South - Wakuwaku Nanboku Sensou (japan)

North & South came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, published by Infogrames. It was part of that wave of strategy and action hybrids that felt experimental for the NES, games that tried to blend different genres into one cartridge. You don't see many titles that mix turn-based map movement with real-time battles quite like this one.

You control generals from either the Union or Confederate armies, moving units across a map of the United States to capture territories. The main goal is to conquer the enemy capital. On the strategic map, you manage your trains, shifting soldiers and supplies to fortify your positions. Then, when you attack an enemy-held state, the game switches to a side-scrolling action scene. You direct your troops from a fort, ordering infantry charges, managing cavalry, and even firing cannons at the enemy's train. The real-time battles are chaotic; you are constantly balancing offense with defense, trying to capture the enemy's flag while protecting your own. It can be surprisingly difficult to manage the different unit types under pressure. Playing it feels like a frantic tug-of-war, where a single well-placed cannon shot can turn the tide of a whole battle.
