North and South came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989, developed by Infogrames. It was part of that wave of late 80s NES games that tried to blend different genres, in this case strategy and action, into one package.

You command either the Union or Confederate armies during the American Civil War. On a strategic map, you move regiments between states to capture territories and cut off enemy supply lines. The real fun starts when two armies meet; the game switches to a side-view battle where you directly control your soldiers. You order infantry to fire, position cannons to break fort walls, and even send cavalry to steal the enemy's flag. The game moves quickly, and the computer opponent can be relentless, making you think on your feet. It feels like a chaotic, hands-on board game where you are constantly putting out fires.
