About Nontan To Issho
I picked up Nontan To Issho on the Game Boy back when it came out in 1990. It was published by Victor Interactive Software, a company that released a number of titles for Nintendo's handheld during that period. The game is based on a popular Japanese children's picture book character, which placed it among the many licensed adaptations trying to find an audience on the small screen.
You control Nontan, a little kitten, through a series of simple, side scrolling stages. The main goal is to navigate these environments, interacting with various objects and characters you meet. A key part of the gameplay involves finding and using specific items to solve minor puzzles or progress past obstacles. The mechanics are built for a young audience, with straightforward platforming and tasks like bouncing on clouds or perhaps helping a friend. The pacing is gentle and the challenge is minimal, focusing more on exploration and light interaction than on testing your reflexes. It feels like a quiet, charming walk through a storybook world.
