About Nintendo World Cup (usa, Europe)
I first played Nintendo World Cup on my Game Boy around 1990. It was developed by Technos Japan, the same company that made the Kunio-kun games, so it had that familiar, slightly rough style. On a system full of puzzle games and ports, this was a straightforward sports title you could pick up and play anywhere.
You control a team of six players on a small field, moving them up and down the screen to kick the ball into the opponent's goal. The main objective is simple: score more goals than the other team to win the tournament. The game's signature mechanics are its special shots, like the bicycle kick, and the physical shoulder charge you can use to knock opposing players down, sometimes leaving them dazed on the field for a few seconds. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty ramps up quickly as you face teams that are much more aggressive. It feels chaotic and a little unfair at times, but pulling off a long shot from your own half for a goal is a genuine thrill.
