About Nintendo World Cup
Nintendo World Cup came out for the Game Boy in 1990, developed by Technos Japan. It was one of many sports titles on the handheld, a time when developers were figuring out how to fit a full field game onto that small screen. You got a portable version of soccer that was simple to pick up but had its own distinct flavor.
You control a team of five players on a side scrolling field, moving your selected athlete with the D pad and passing or shooting with the buttons. The main goal is to outscore the opposing team before time runs out. Signature mechanics include the sliding tackle, which sends your player diving across the turf, and the super shot, a powerful kick you charge up for a moment. The game moves quickly, and the computer opponents can be surprisingly aggressive, making every match feel scrappy. It feels like a frantic, condensed version of soccer where a single lucky bounce can decide the game.
