About Nichibutsu Mahjong
Nichibutsu Mahjong was one of the early titles for the original Game Boy, released in 1990 by the developer Nichibutsu. It arrived when the handheld library was still growing, offering a digital version of a classic tile game for on the go play. This was not a flashy release, but a straightforward adaptation meant for a specific audience.
You control the cursor to select and discard tiles, aiming to build a complete hand by forming sequences and sets. The main objective is to win rounds by declaring "ron" or "tsumo" before your virtual opponents. Signature mechanics include calling discarded tiles from other players to complete your own combinations, and navigating the game's scoring system which involves specific hand patterns called yaku. The pacing is methodical, and the computer opponents can be quite challenging, demanding careful planning for each move. It feels like a quiet, focused battle of wits played out on a small gray screen.
