So, New Ghostbusters II—yeah, the one that never made it to the US. It’s an NES game by Hal, and honestly, it’s kind of a weird little time capsule. You’re running around in the Ghostbusters’ shoes (or jumpsuits, I guess), but it’s not quite like the movies. The controls take a second to get used to—you’ve got this weird diagonal shooting thing going on, and the ghosts bounce around like they’ve had too much ecto-caffeine.
At first, I thought it was just another licensed game cash-in, but there’s something oddly charming about it. The music’s got that classic 8-bit vibe, and some of the levels actually make you think a little before charging in proton blasters blazing. Still, good luck explaining to your friends why you’re playing the Europe-only Ghostbusters sequel from 1990.
