About Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun
I first played Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-Kun on the Game Boy in 1990, a time when portable games were mostly simple affairs. Technos Japan Corp., the developer, was already known for the Kunio-kun series on home consoles, and this release brought that style of brawling to a smaller screen. It felt like a natural fit for the handheld, even with the hardware limitations.
You control Kunio, a high school delinquent, as you walk through the city fighting rival gang members. Your main goal is to clear each area of enemies, moving screen by screen through urban environments like streets and parks. The combat relies on punches, kicks, and grapples; you can pick up weapons like bats or chains, and throwing enemies is particularly satisfying. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty can be sharp, demanding quick reflexes to handle groups. Playing it feels like a straightforward, energetic scuffle from start to finish.
