NHL Hockey '96 on Game Boy is one of those old-school sports games that somehow makes tiny pixels feel like a full-blown hockey match. You pick your team—I always went for the Red Wings back then—and jump right into a surprisingly fast game of 5-on-5. The controls are simple (A to pass, B to shoot), but timing your slapshots just right takes practice.
The players are these little blobs with helmets, yet you can totally tell the difference between a winger and a goalie by how they move. The crowd noise is just a basic loop of cheering, but when you finally break through the defense and score, it still feels awesome. And yeah, fights happen—just mash buttons until someone ends up in the penalty box.
It’s not the prettiest hockey game now, but for a Game Boy title, it nails the speed and chaos of real hockey. Just don’t expect fancy dekes or realistic physics.
