NHL '96 for the Game Boy came out in 1995 from EA Sports, a time when getting a full sports sim on a handheld felt like a small miracle. It was one of the few hockey titles you could take with you, a pocket-sized version of the bigger console games that defined mid-90s sports gaming.
You control a five-man hockey team, skating up and down the screen to pass the puck and take shots on goal. The main objective is to outscore your opponent, navigating the condensed rink to set up plays. Signature mechanics include a simple one-button shooting and passing system and a dedicated button for body checks, letting you disrupt the other team's momentum. The game moves quickly, and the difficulty can spike, especially against the computer on higher settings. It feels like a fast, chaotic scramble where a single mistake can cost you a goal.
