About Nes Test
I was digging through old NES ROMs and found one simply called NES Test. It was released by Nintendo in 1986, I think, as a diagnostic cartridge for testing the console hardware. It's not a commercial game, but it gives you a strange look at the system's inner workings from that era.
You don't control a character so much as you navigate menus. The main objective is to check things like the controller inputs, the sound channels, and the graphics. You press buttons to see if they register on screen, you listen for audio tones, and you watch color bars and test patterns. It's a methodical process, screen by screen, with no enemies or levels to beat. The pacing is slow and deliberate, since it's a tool, not an adventure. It feels like peeking under the hood of the console to see how all the parts are supposed to function.
