NES Play Action Football came out in 1990 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed and published by Nintendo. It was one of the later football titles on the console, arriving when many players were already familiar with the format and limitations of 8-bit sports games.

You control a team of eleven players, selecting plays from a menu and then directing the action on the field. The main objective is to outscore your opponent by moving the ball downfield for touchdowns or field goals. A couple of its signature mechanics include the ability to dive for extra yards as the ball carrier and a unique, zoomed-in view for passing plays that shows your receivers running their routes. The game moves at a deliberate pace, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, especially when trying to complete passes against the computer's defense. It feels like a simplified, sometimes clumsy interpretation of football where a single broken tackle can change the entire game.
