NBA All-Star Challenge 2 on Game Boy is exactly what it sounds like—a stripped-down, portable version of NBA Jam before NBA Jam existed. You pick from a roster of 90s stars (some names you’ll recognize, others… not so much), and then it’s straight into 2-on-2 half-court action. No frills, no playbooks—just you, the ball, and way too many pixelated free throws.
The controls take a second to click—hold B to charge your shot, release to fire, and pray it goes in. Defense feels a little stiff at first, but once you get the timing down for steals, you’ll be swiping the ball like Stockton. Dunking’s the real highlight though—nothing beats that satisfying *beep* when you posterize someone with a pixelated David Robinson.
It’s janky, the AI cheats sometimes, and the sound effects are basically just beeps, but there’s a weird charm to it. Perfect for killing time on a road trip if you’ve got a Game Boy and a thing for retro sports games. Just don’t expect a deep simulation.
