Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon is one of those N64 gems that somehow flew under the radar—probably because it’s just so weird in the best way possible. You play as Goemon, this blue-haired ninja dude who runs around feudal Japan (but like, a version where robots and giant kabuki mechs exist) smacking enemies with his pipe and tossing coins like shurikens. The humor’s goofy, the music’s got shamisens going wild, and the whole thing feels like a Saturday morning anime that got way too ambitious.
First 10 minutes? You’ll be platforming across rooftops, smashing pots for cash, and then suddenly piloting a giant robot to punch a castle in the face. It shouldn’t work, but it absolutely does. The puzzles are just tricky enough to make you feel clever, and the world’s packed with little secrets—like hot springs where you can soak for health or NPCs who say completely unhinged things. If you’ve ever wanted a Zelda-like adventure but with more absurdity and a talking raccoon dog, this is your game.
Also, the soundtrack slaps. That’s non-negotiable.
