Mortal Kombat on Game Boy? Yeah, it's a stripped-down version of the arcade classic, but somehow they made those pixelated fatalities still feel brutal. You've got your basic punches, kicks, and special moves—Scorpion's spear looks janky as hell in 8-bit, but when it connects, that satisfying "GET OVER HERE" still hits.
Don't expect the blood fountains from the console versions, though. The gore's toned down (it is the Japan release after all), but Sub-Zero ripping out a spine in chunky pixels has its own weird charm. The roster's slim—just seven fighters—but Liu Kang's bicycle kick somehow feels even more ridiculous when it's this tiny.
Honestly, it's impressive they got the essence of Mortal Kombat onto a handheld in '93. Just don't try to play it in the dark—those sprites are hard enough to see in broad daylight.
