Mortal Kombat 3 on the Game Boy? Yeah, it’s actually way better than you’d expect for a tiny handheld version. The sprites are surprisingly sharp, and the controls somehow don’t feel totally butchered—Scorpion’s spear still lands with that satisfying thwip, and Sub-Zero’s ice blast freezes just like it should.
It’s missing a few characters from the arcade version, but you’ve still got the heavy hitters: Raiden’s lightning, Liu Kang’s bicycle kick, all that good stuff. The Fatalities are obviously toned down (this is a Game Boy cart), but they kept the spirit of them—expect pixelated blood and some creative camera angles to imply the gore.
Single-player’s your standard ladder of fights, but the real fun is handing a buddy the other side of the link cable. Nothing like watching them panic when you start inputting that uppercut combo. Just don’t expect flawless victory every time—the AI cheats like crazy on higher difficulties.
If you’ve got a soft spot for janky portable adaptations of fighting games, this one’s weirdly charming.
