About Morita Kazuo No Shougi (japan)
Morita Kazuo no Shougi came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986, published by Random House. It was part of that wave of early NES titles that brought traditional Japanese games to a console audience, sitting alongside other strategy and board game adaptations from the period.
You play against a computer opponent in a digital version of shogi, the Japanese chess variant. Your main objective is to checkmate the opponent's king, just like in the standard game. Key mechanics include moving your pieces according to their specific rules, such as the lance which slides forward or the gold general which moves one square in most directions. You can also promote your pieces when they enter the enemy camp, changing their movement capabilities to become more powerful. The pacing is deliberate, requiring careful planning of each move, and the difficulty can feel steep if you are unfamiliar with shogi's deeper strategies. Playing it feels like a quiet, focused mental exercise where a single mistake can unravel your entire position.
