Monster Race Okawari is one of those weird little Game Boy gems that never left Japan—which is a shame, because it’s basically Pokémon meets Mario Kart with a monster-collecting twist. You pick your creature (I went with the turtle first, because obviously), then race through these short, chaotic tracks while tossing items and bumping into other monsters. The sprites are tiny but full of charm, and the controls are simple enough that you’ll be sliding around corners within a race or two.

What’s cool is how each monster handles differently—some are fast but slide all over the place, others are slow but tank through obstacles. There’s even a weird rock-paper-scissors element where certain monsters counter others. It’s not deep, but it’s the kind of game you boot up when you’ve got 10 minutes to kill and end up playing for an hour. If you’re into retro racing games with a quirky vibe, this one’s worth digging up.
