About Monster Race
Monster Race came out for the Game Boy in 1990, developed by KID and published by Irem. It was part of that wave of early portable games where developers were figuring out what worked on the small screen, often creating unique hybrids of familiar genres. You don't hear much about it now, but it had a specific charm that stood out from the more common platformers and puzzle games of the time.
You control a small, customizable monster, guiding it through a series of side-view racetracks against a computer opponent. The main goal is to win each race by reaching the finish line first, but it's not purely about speed. You collect power-ups scattered on the track that let you attack your rival with projectiles or temporary traps, and you also manage a stamina meter that depletes as you run, forcing you to occasionally slow down to recover. The pacing is methodical, more tactical than frantic, with the difficulty coming from learning the track layouts and timing your disruptions. It feels like a strange, thoughtful duel, a mix of racing and combat that requires patience as much as quick reflexes.
