About Monster Maker : Barcode Saga
Monster Maker: Barcode Saga came out for the original Game Boy, a title from the early handheld era. I believe it was published by Bandai, one of those companies that experimented with different kinds of games for the system. It fits right in with that period where developers were trying out unique concepts, often using physical objects to interact with the game world.
You play as a young boy who creates and trains monsters to fight for him. Your main goal is to raise your monster, battle other creatures, and progress through the game's world. The defining feature is using a barcode scanner peripheral; you scan real-world barcodes to generate new monsters and items. You also explore areas screen by screen, engage in turn-based battles, and manage your monster's growth. The pacing can be slow, as finding effective barcodes requires some trial and error, and the difficulty comes from building a strong team. It feels like a strange, personal experiment every time you pick up a product to see what the game will make of it.
