Momotarou Densetsu Gaiden is one of those obscure Game Boy RPGs that never made it outside Japan—which is a shame, because it’s got this weirdly charming mix of classic turn-based battles and Japanese folklore. You play as Momotarou (the peach boy from the old legend), but instead of just fighting oni, you’re recruiting animal allies, grinding through random encounters, and navigating menus in Japanese. The pixel art’s simple but full of personality, especially the little sprites for your party members.
It’s definitely a product of its time—expect lots of backtracking and cryptic progression if you don’t know the language. But if you’re into retro JRPGs or just curious about Japan-only releases, it’s a neat little time capsule. The NES version cleaned up the graphics a bit, but the Game Boy original has that grungy handheld vibe I love.
