About Mogu Mogu Gombo
I picked up Mogu Mogu Gombo on the Game Boy, a Japan only release from 1990 by publisher IGS. It arrived during the handheld's early years, a time when developers were still figuring out what worked on that small green screen. This game is a puzzle platformer, a genre that was becoming more common as the library expanded beyond simple arcade ports.
You control a small, round creature navigating a series of single screen rooms. The main goal is to clear each stage by eating all the fruit, which then opens the exit. Your primary tool is your extendable tongue; you latch onto ceilings and swing across gaps, which requires careful timing. The levels are filled with enemies and environmental hazards, and you can defeat foes by swinging into them. The pacing is deliberate, as you study each room's layout to plan your route. It feels like a thoughtful, sometimes tense, test of precision.
