About Mito Koumon (japan)
Mito Koumon came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, developed by Natsume. It was part of that wave of Japanese titles that never left the country, based on a long running television drama about a retired Edo period lord traveling in disguise.
You control the lord, Tokugawa Mitsukuni, and his two retainers as you walk through towns and the countryside screen by screen. Your main goal is to uncover local injustices and set things right, which involves talking to townspeople for clues, finding hidden items, and occasionally getting into fights. A key mechanic is using your retainers to scout ahead or create diversions, while another is the risk of being recognized; if your identity is revealed in the wrong place, it can trigger a confrontation. The game moves at a deliberate pace, with some obtuse puzzles that can make progress slow. It feels like a methodical exploration of a historical drama where patience is your primary tool.
